A boy in modern Japan wishes to be a mastermind wielding power from the shadows, but in the process of training, he is hit by a truck and killed. He is reincarnated in a fantasy world under the name of Cid Kagenou, where he maintains a perfectly mediocre appearance in order not to stand out but to pursue his dream of manipulating from the shadows. One day, he comes across an elf girl infected with a mysterious disease and cures her.
Cid makes up a story and explains that this world is secretly run by the Cult of Diabolos, and their secret organization, Shadow Garden, is the only one that can fight them. The elf girl, now named Alpha, joins this organization and starts recruiting new members. However, the stories that Cid made up were actually true, but he believes it to be a total hoax. Cid continues to fight the Cult of Diabolos under the Shadow alias, completely unaware that he is involved in a complicated power struggle.
