If you are looking for unfiltered gore and despair, Tokyo Ghoul is the anime for you.
The story of Tokyo Ghoul follows a young college student Kaneki Ken whose life is turned upside down after a date gone wrong.
His date turns out to be a demon (carnivorous monster that hides in the normal world).
Kaneki survives a fatal attack, but is transformed into a ghoul in the process.
Thereafter, the anime follows Kaneki coming to terms with his new life and navigating the human and ghoul world filled with dark revelations.

Tokyo Ghoul fans and longtime manga readers have heavily criticized the last few seasons of Tokyo Ghoul (Tokyo Ghoul:re).
They think he did a lousy job and was not true to the manga or the heart of the story.
Certainly many major plot points from the manga were left out of the anime and there were many inconsistencies throughout the later seasons.
However, if you can enjoy the anime as its own, then it’s definitely worth watching.
