Fake news, deepfakes, and artificial intelligence-generated content. The web is full of these things.
Generative adversarial networks are now being used to create real-world objects that do not exist in reality as well. There are all kinds of them too, some incredible, some silly, and all definitely interesting.
We’ve collected a few for your enjoyment.
This dog does not exist
This dog does not exist. Instead, it is created along with the rest of the image using Google’s artificial intelligence known as Imagen.
Imagen uses artificial intelligence to create images using just text input. In this case, this text was:
“Photo of a corgi riding a bike in Times Square. Wearing sunglasses and a beach hat.”
A very specific application with fun and great results.
This beach does not exist
This beach doesn’t exist, it’s built with Nvidia Canvas, a free app that uses artificial intelligence to turn your digital paintings into photo-realistic images in real time.
We’ve written about Canvas before and showed what it can do. It’s a great tool that’s remarkably easy to use and the results are impressive too.
This bacon sandwich does not exist
Sure, this BLT sandwich looks delicious, but unfortunately it’s not edible because it’s not real. Manufactured by DALL-E 2.
This is artificial intelligence designed to create unique images with simple text input. We’ve previously shown some of what this AI can do and it sure is impressive. The future of AI-generated content is sure to be interesting.
This cat does not exist
the cats. Either you love them or you hate them. How do you feel about a cat that doesn’t even exist?
These AI-generated cats are fairly convincing and unlikely to cause you any allergy issues, which is a bonus.
This pony does not exist
This Pony Doesn’t Exist is a site that displays a colorful grid of AI-generated pony images created using Nvidia’s StyleGAN2 architecture.
With some clever magic, these creatures have been created, cropped, miniaturized, and displayed in all their glory for your viewing pleasure.
This car does not exist
This is a site that generates compounds that did not exist before. All kinds of weird and wonderful cars that you’ve never seen before and never will.
This is definitely not the best on our list. Click and refresh the page a few times and you’ll see some really good single wheel machines.
These people do not exist
The people you see in this set of photos do not exist and never have. They were generated by a generative adversarial network originally developed by Nvidia, and later used by Philip Wang to create This Person Doesn’t Exist.
This site mainly uses artificial intelligence to randomly generate completely synthetic but hyper-realistic avatars. People who have never graced the planet yet could easily live next to you.
This technique is pretty disturbing when you consider what Inverse noticed when interviewing a creator.
“In a society where photos and images are the standard alternatives to ‘proof’, GANs will soon allow anyone to provide ‘evidence’ that any imaginable person did anything imaginable…for example, an outrageous actor could post a video or An image created by GANs that depicts a fake event to incite riots, protests, or other potentially violent reactions online.”
Scary, but it doesn’t detract from how impressive this technology is.
This meme does not exist
Everyone loves a good meme. So why don’t we apply AI to create some new AI? That’s just what ImgFlip did.
This nonexistent meme is the result and the system generated images are, well, something special.
This city does not exist
This City Doesn’t Exist is an impressive site that displays various aerial photos of cities that don’t really exist. Yet it looks like something you’d find by scrolling through Google Maps or staring out an airplane window. Land and sea collide with man-made structures, all created by artificial intelligence.
These eyes do not exist
This may sound unusual when compared to others, but it is actually very interesting.
The author/creator of This Eye Doesn’t Exist well explains:
“Imagine you’re a makeup artist of sorts and you need to visualize some new eye makeup brands. But you’ve got a problem, you’re out of ideas. Generative adversarial networks allow you to create things that don’t exist, let’s say, images of eyes with makeup. This algorithm basically allows you to “dream up.” “With new things…”
It’s good to think that generative adversarial networks can be used forever. As well as creating imaginary nonsense from the ether.
These beetles do not exist
This is an interesting project that uses machine learning to create illustrations of beetles that don’t really exist. This was created using machine learning to analyze thousands of illustrations already in the public domain.
Inspired by depictions of zoology, botany, and archaeology, this ladybug is definitely gorgeous and differs from the others on this list that exist as realistic, somewhat disguised images.
These panels do not exist
This exciting addition to our list takes something that doesn’t exist and turns it into something physical that does.
These are artworks created with BigGAN (Generative Adversarial Networks) by Google and then printed and drawn for your enjoyment by Ganvas Studio.
The idea is to use the Joel Simon Ganbreeder system to create your own artwork, then get Ganvas Studio to print it.
Ganbreeder lets you combine images and use artificial intelligence to create something completely unique — and a little weird, too.
These panels do not exist
Art educator anomaly. A site that creates fake artwork with simple settings tweaks to change aspects of it. The results are weird, wonderful, and definitely unique.
These are examples of selfies that have been created with this technology but would not exist otherwise.
These landscape paintings do not exist
Like Portraits, these painted scenes of colorful and beautiful landscapes do not actually exist, but are instead created with GANS and human interaction.
This is not a Rembrandt
This may look like a painting by master painter Rembrandt, but it was actually made by technology.
It’s been 400 years since the last Rembrandt painting, yet art historians and art historians have been able to use a combination of data and facial recognition technology to analyze 346 different Rembrandt paintings.
This data was then used to determine the typical geometric patterns used by the painter with an emphasis on certain human facial features. A 3D printer was used to paint 13 layers of ultraviolet ink to create the realistic painting that would make up The Next Rembrandt.
This ship does not exist
Derek Phillip Oh, creator of This Vessel Does Not Exist, explains the logic of this vessel quite well:
The history of ceramics is the history of imitation and reproduction.
The apprentice obtains mastery of the craft through repetition, and gradually improves his technique. Guided by the age of the craft, the master examines each piece made by the student and throws out those deemed unsuitable.
The counterfeiter creates replicas and tests them on the market. The connoisseur, informed by decades of experience handling antiques, judges the replicas. Those believed to be genuine are sold, and the counterfeiter continues to create ever more convincing copies.
Here, GANs have been used to create fake ships that are then generated, judged, and optimized. The result is a seemingly endless array of artificial intelligence-generated vases and bowls.
This beach does not exist
Like the other things on this list, this beach does not exist but is instead generated using a trained AI network. StyleGAN2-ADA was fed 20,000 photos of beaches to allow it to create some stunning beach views. Mostly beautiful and picturesque beaches (devoid of people) which unfortunately you will never get to visit.
This art does not exist
It seems that artificial intelligence may be good at making works of art. Especially the abstract artwork that just baffles you when you look at it anyway.
This chair does not exist
Like a number of others on this list, Chair was created using generative adversarial networks that had been trained. In this case, it is trained on a data set of different chairs.
Interestingly, the site allows you to create and change chairs on the go. The best thing about this is that you can adjust the weirdness meter to make the chairs “normal” or completely crazy. Get some inspiration for a new chair design or just marvel at the crazy seats.
These pills do not exist
These pills do not exist. Which is good news because it does look healthy.
Created with Dalle-2 with the request for “a box of fruit pebbles on a grocery store shelf”. Perhaps AI image generation could be used to come up with new ideas for cereal or at least design boxes.
This cat does not exist
This is an interesting creation. A site that lets you create your own pictures of things based on your drawings. You can draw cats, shoes, or handbags and the system will try to create images based on what you’ve drawn.
This uses artificial intelligence trained on the images of your chosen item. The results are weird and wonderful, depending on your drawing abilities.
This news does not exist
A team of scientists has created an artificial intelligence capable of writing disturbingly convincing fake news.
Fake news is a huge problem on the Internet, and the idea that artificial intelligence can write believable news with relative ease is disturbing.
According to the research, GROVER is also able to analyze and identify fake news posted elsewhere. At the time, it was said to be able to detect fake news written by AI more effectively than any other such tool.
